Unlike the childhood fad of hula hooping where children play with flimsy plastic hula hoops, ‘Hooping’ (also known as ‘hoop dance’) is the fusion of dance, exercise and play using a larger, slightly weighted hoop. Skill, technique and a positive attitude are essential to Hooping and the performance of various skills. These skills range from hooping around the waist, knees and chest to experimenting with lifts and turns using the hoop. This type of Hooping works the core muscles which help to support and stabilise the whole body. It contributes to a whole body workout as it tones the entire body while developing coordination, balance and large motor muscle control. Once coordination of the hoop become natural, control will follow and movements will not be careless or haphazard. However, this takes practice and like most things, everyone progresses at their own pace. Hooping is a mental as well as physically exercise. A mind and body connection is needed to be successful. Hooping heightens spatial awareness of self and others while allowing you to move mindfully. It also stimulates the body physically, emotionally and mentally. Hooping will help to relieve stress and ultimately leave you feeling happier and more energized.
